Sumter is a county or district in South Carolina. It was formed in 1800 from the following county/ies or district/s: Clarendon/Claremont/Salem Counties in Camden District|. It has functioned since 1785 (Clarendon/Claremont Counties in Camden District). Sumter began keeping birth records in 1915, marriage records in 1911, and death records in 1915. It began keeping land records in 1801, probate records in 1774, and court records in 1795. For more information, contact the county at 13 E. Canal St., Sumter 29150-4925. On the attached map, Sumter is located at G4. Record loss, 1801, destroyed records of Clarendon and Old Claremont Counties. Records fragmented.
