Montana does not have a complete listing of all known cemeteries, nor does it have an agency over cemeteries. Some cemetery records are kept by the county clerk and recorder; in other cases, the county has a cemetery board that is responsible for record keeping. Many cemeteries have no records, and others kept records only of who purchased the lot and the name of the individual buried there. The policy varies with each cemetery. Some Montana genealogical societies have transcribed cemetery records in their counties. The website www.interment.net has a growing collection of indexes to Montana graveyards.
