Major holdings of the department are outlined in its 1977 catalog, compiled by Tomas W. Henderson and Ronald E. Tomlin, Guide to the Official Records in the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, which lists collections by record group number and itemizes county records available on the premises in microfilm form. Holdings acquired since 1977 have been described in the archives' annual and biennial reports. Some records are restricted (for example, those of the insane asylums and charity hospitals), but an archivist will usually provide a copy of available data on a specific individual. The department offers online finding aids and indexes that include newspapers on microfilm, film collections, personal records (manuscripts), the biographical index, and the cemetery index. See www.mdah.state.ms.us/arlib/find.html.

Boyd and Julia Marks Young, Mississippi's Historical Heritage: A Directory of Libraries, Archives, and Organizations (Hattiesburg, Miss: Society of Mississippi Archivists, 1990). The publication provides an alphabetical listing of institutions by county, their current address, and a general summary of published and unpublished historical materials.
