Project Instructions
This collection contains worker identification cards issued to those working in the Lodz ghetto.

The majority of the images will be of worker identification cards. They will either be of the front of the card or of the back of the card.

Occasionally other images will appear. These images will be of a family card, which contain all members in a household, or of information cards which provide basic information about an individual.

Click here to see a list of professions - they are given in German with the English translation. This will he helpful in determining the entries for the Occupation fields.

Family Card

Choose the "Family Card" form type when the image is of a list of members in a household.

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the person as seen on the record, using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. Key each person as a new record. The given name will be found on the line or column named 'Name u. Vorname.' The surname (name) will typically be written before the given name (vorname).'

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record, using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. It will be found on the line marked "Name" or "Familienname."

Resident Address

Key the resident address as seen. It will be on the line named "wohnh" or "adresse."

Relation to Head

Key the relationship of the individual to the head of household as seen on the record using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. It will be in the "Verse. Gred" column.

Birth Year or Age

Key the value as seen on the record from the "Altern" column.

ID Card Back

Choose the "ID Card Back" form type when the image is of the back of an identification card.

Profession

Key the profession as seen on the record using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. The profession will be found on the lined named "Erlernter Beruf."

Second Occupation

Key the second occupation as seen on the record using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. The second occupation will be found on the line named "Angelernter Beruf."

Gender

Key the gender as seen on the record using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. The gender will be found on the line named "Geschlecht."

Age

Key the age as seen. The age will be found on the line named "Alter am 1.1.1943"

Working Since Day

Key the working since day from the working since date. The working since date will be found on the line names "Arbeitet seit." All dates will be in day-month-year format.

Working Since Month

Key the working since month from the working since date using the drop-down menu provided to assist you.  The working since date will be found on the line names "Arbeitet seit." All dates will be in day-month-year format.

Months in German:

• 1 - I - Januar
• 2 - II - Februar
• 3 - III - März
• 4 - IV - April
• 5 - V - Mai
• 6 - VI - Juni
• 7 - VII - Juli
• 8 - VIII - August
• 9 - IX - September
• 10 - X - Oktober

Note: Occasionally there is a stamp with the month abbreviated in Polish. The names of the months in Polish:

Working Since Year

Key the working since year from the working since date. The working since date will be found on the line names "Arbeitet seit." All dates will be in day-month-year format.

ID Card Front

Choose the "ID Card Front" when the image is of the front of an identification card. It will say

Photo

Key Yes if there is a photo present and No if there is no photo present on the ID card

Worker Number

Key the worker number as seen. The worker number will be found on the line named "Arbeiter Nr."

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record, using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. It will be found on the line marked "Name" or "Familienname."

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person as seen on the record, using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. It will be found on the line marked "Vorname."

Birth Day

Key the birth day from the birth date. The birth date will be found on the line named "Geburtsdatum" or with the abbreviation "Geb." All dates will be in day-month-year format.

Key the birth month from the birth date. The birth date will be found on the line named "Geburtsdatum" or with the abbreviation "Geb." All dates will be in day-month-year format. Months in German:

Birth Year

Resident Address

Key the resident address as seen. It will be on the line named "wohnh" or "adresse."

Death Day

Key the death day from the death date. The death date will be on identification cards with the "Gestorben" stamp on the front. The death date will be after the word "Am." All dates are in day-month-year format.

Not all cards with the "Gestorben" stamp will include death dates.

If the card has a "Gestorben" stamp on the front with no date after the word "Am", key the words "no date" in the death day field.

If the card has a "Transport" stamp on the front instead of a "Gestorben" stamp, key the word "transport" in the death day field.

Death Month

Key the death month from the death date using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. The death date will be on identification cards with the "Gestorben" stamp on the front. The death date will be after the word "Am." All dates are in day-month-year format. Not all cards with the "Gestorben" stamp will include death dates.

Death Year

Key the death year from the death date. The death date will be on identification cards with the "Gestorben" stamp on the front. The death date will be after the word "Am." All dates are in day-month-year format. Not all cards with the "Gestorben" stamp will include death dates.

Factory Number

Key the Factory Number from the field following the words "ist in dem Betrieb Nr." Key as seen.

Factory Name

Key the Factory Name from the field directly below the Factory Number. Key as seen.

Worker Assignment at Factory

Key the Worker Assignment at Factory from the field below the Factory Name following the word "als", using the drop-down menu provided to assist you.

ID Card Day

Key the ID Card Day from the field on the left side of the card following the words "Litzmannstadt-Getto, den". The date will be in the day/month/year format.

ID Card Month

Key the ID Card Month from the field on the left side of the card following the words "Litzmannstadt-Getto, den", using the dictionary provided to assist you. The date will be in the day/month/year format.

• 2 - II - Februar
• 3 - III - März
• 4 - IV - April
• 5 - V - Mai
• 6 - VI - Juni
• 7 - VII - Juli

ID Card Year

Key the ID Card Year from the field on the left side of the card following the words "Litzmannstadt-Getto, den". Key the 4-digit year. The date will be in the day/month/year format.

Information Cards

Choose the "Information Cards" form type when the image is of a card that says "Abmeldebestätigung" or "Auskunfts-Karte" at the top.

Card Number

Key the card number as seen on the record. The card number will be found in the upper right-hand corner on the line named "Nr."

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record, using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. It will be found on the line marked "Name" or "Familienname."

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person as seen on the record, using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. It will be found on the line marked "Vorname."

First Name of Parents

Key the first name of parents as seen on the record, using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. If more than one name appears, key both names and separate with a comma. It will be on the line named "Vornamen der Eltern."

Birth Place

Key the birth place as seen on the record using the drop-down menu provided to assist you. The birth place will be found on the line named "Geburtsort."

Birth Day

Key the birth day from the birth date. The birth date will be found on the line named "Geburtsdatum" or with the abbreviation "Geb." All dates will be in day-month-year format.

Birth Month

Key the birth month from the birth date. The birth date will be found on the line named "Geburtsdatum" or with the abbreviation "Geb." All dates will be in day-month-year format.
