About this project Vagrants' passes were papers that enabled those deemed to be vagrants to make their way back from wherever they had been caught wandering by the authorities to their place of legal settlement.

Need help keying this project?

Key all individuals. Infer a surname from a listed spouse if necessary. (For example, if the primary person is "Mary, the wife of John Smith" key Mary Smith.) Create a new record for each individual listed together as families. Do not key names of constables, magistrates, or other individuals who are not listed vagrants/rogues/vagabonds.

Key dates as numeric if written out. Note that these records cover the transition from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in England. If a date appears as January 3, 1741/42, key the month and date as seen, and key the first year, in this case 1741.

Forms throughout the project, whether handwritten or printed, tend to follow the same general organization and use the same formal wording according to form type. Therefore, a handwritten Vagrant Pass, and a printed version of the same document should have the same language and order of information. This should assist in keying handwritten documents.
