About this project This series contains descriptive lists of colored volunteers enlisted in the Army under General Order 135, Headquarters of the Department of the Missouri, dated November 14, 1863.  They give the name, age, color of eyes, hair, complexion, height, place of birth, occupation, date of enlistment, by whom and for what period, and remarks.  If a soldier was a former slave, his owner's name is entered.  Signed certifications of the examining surgeon and the recruiting officer are included.

Need help keying this project?

This collection contains descriptive lists of colored volunteers from Kentucky who enlisted in the United States army during the Civil War.

General keying instructions:

1. We will be keying the name, enlistment county, and enlistment date for every soldier as well as age and birth place for some of the soldiers where that information is available. Key the soldier's rank in the Prefix field.

2. If the soldier was a former slave, the owners name is also listed in the record and should be keyed. Owners names are only being keyed on the Muster rolls.

The project will use two form types, an "Enlistment Roll" which does not have a title at the top of the image, and a "Muster Roll" which has the title Record of Muster Made By...at the top of the image.
