Naturalizations might have been applied for or obtained through either the county court or U.S. District Courts. The Vermont Public Records Division holds microfilm copies of some naturalizations from 1836 to 1972. Others, notably those filed in Chittenden County, remain at the district probate office. A complete WPA index, which includes Vermont, along with the rest of New England (except Connecticut) for 1790 to 1906, is held at the Boston and Pittsfield facilities of the National Archives'Northeast Region and at the New England Historic Genealogical Society.
