Overview

The following should not be considered a comprehensive list of the numerous tribes, bands, and sub-bands mentioned in the records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the custody of the National Archives. Researchers can consult John R. Swanton's The Indian Tribes of North America for information about specific tribes.<ref>R. Swanton, The Indian Tribes of North America (Washington D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1979).</ref>

The following table includes only the names of the agencies that had primary responsibility for a tribe. If any of the pre-1800 correspondence from that agency to the Commissioner of Indian affairs is available on National Archives microfilm publication M234, there is a citation to the appropriate rolls. If there are any census rolls for the tribe among those taken from 1885 to 1940, there is a reference to the appropriate roll numbers of microfilm publication M595.
