Microfilm lists of ships' passenger arrivals at the port of New York are at the National Archives'Northeast Region (1820'1952) and at the New York Public Library (1820'1910). The archives has name indexes for 1820 to 1846 and 1897 to 1948, and the public library has them for 1820 to 1846 and 1897 to 1943. A portion of the gap in the unindexed period (1847'97) has been filled by such publications as Ira Glazier, ed., The Famine Immigrants...1846'1851, 8 vols. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1983'86); Robert P. Swierenga, comp., Dutch Immigrants in U.S. Ship Passenger Manifests, 1820'1880, 2 vols. (Wilmington, Del.: Scholarly Resources, 1983); Nils William Olsson and Erick Wiken, Swedish Passenger Arrivals in the United States, 1820'1850 (Stockholm: The Royal Library of Sweden, 1995), No. LV of Acta Bibliothecae Regiae Stocholmiensis, combining two earlier works and adding more information); Ira A. Glazier and P. William Filby, eds., Germans to America...1840'[1900], 70 vols. to date (Wilmington, Del.: Scholarly Resources, 1988' ); Gary J. Zimmerman and Marion Wolfert, German Immigrants'¦from Bremen to New York, 1847'1871, 4 vols. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1985'93); Trudy Schenk and Ruth Froelke, The Wuerttemberg Emigration Index, 8 vols. to date (Salt Lake City: Ancestry, 1986' ); Ira A. Glazier and P. William Filby, eds., Italians to America 1880'[1900], 14 vols. to date (Wilmington, Del.: Scholarly Resources, Inc., 1992' ); and Ira A. Glazier, ed., Migration from the Russian Empire, 1875'1910, 6 vols. to date (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1995' ). For a critical evaluation of two of these works, see Gordon L. Remington, 'Feast or Famine: Problems in the Genealogical Use of The Famine Immigrants and Germans to America,' National Genealogical Society Quarterly 78 (1990): 135-46.
