Present-day Jefferson County, to the east, was designated as Jones County. When Nebraska was admitted to the Union in 1867, Jefferson and Jones Counties were united as Jefferson. In 1870 Jefferson was again separated. The area that was originally called Jones took the name Jefferson and retained the old county records.
