Tax assessments for the District of Columbia, covering 1814 to 1940, are in NARA Record Group 351, Records of the Government of the District of Columbia, National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, DC 20408.
The Washingtoniana Division of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library has property assessments for 1886 to 1968.

The Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore (see Maryland Archives, Libraries, and Societies) has the original U.S. District Tax of 1798 for the District of Columbia with microfilm copies available at the Georgetown Regional Library of the District of Columbia Archives and at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis.
