Locate West Virginians prior to 1870 in federal census records of Virginia. Collections of microfilmed census records can be searched at the National Archives and its centers (see page 11); the Archives and History Library in Charleston, West Virginia; West Virginia University in Morgantown; and the FHL. Published abstracts of census records can also be found in the above and at local libraries. All West Virginia federal census records are indexed, with viewable images, and included in online databases (see pages 16-17). The 1930 Soundex exists for Fayette, Harrison, Kanawha, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, and Raleigh counties.
