Need help keying this project?

We will only be keying from two types of images:

1. Supplementary Record - a preprinted form that contains vital information about the child and their family

2. Biography - a free form page containing a short biography of the child

There is a third form type, which is the second page of a supplementary record. These images contain additional information about the orphan, particularly about their displacement, moves, and separation from family. However, we will not be keying any information from these images.

On the supplementary records, key each person listed on a page as a unique record. On the biographies, key a unique record for each person listed in the upper right-hand corner. This usually includes one or more children and their parents. Do not key any additional names listed in the biography itself.

Many names and locations will contain diacritics. Key those as seen using the "Insert international characters" button located directly above the keying grid and directly below the image.

This project uses diacritics

If you are using Windows XP there are some diacritics that may not be displayed correctly. This occasionally happens in newer browsers and operating systems as well. You may see a box inserted as a letter. For example: Mie'–¡dzyrzecz instead of Międzyrzecz

When you key letters with diacritics, it is best to use the international character set provided or the numeric shortcut shown in the keying tool. (Note: Not all diacritics will have a shortcut displayed.) Do not use other keyboard shortcuts as a work around. For arbitrators and reviewers who are using Windows XP operating systems, if you see the '–¡ displayed, you will need to key the diacritic using the international characters symbols provided in the tool to ensure the proper diacritic is being entered.

Biography

Use this form type for images consisting of biographies of children stationed at the children's home in Ulm. For the child, enter "Self" into this field. If there are multiple children listed on one image, enter "Self" as the relationship for each child.

For the parents, enter "Father" or "Mother." The father's name is usually the first of the two parents names listed. For example, if it says "daughter of Nathan and Golda," key "Father" for the relationship of Nathan and "Mother" for the relationship of Golda.
