About this project This collection contains voter registration cards covering mainly Paris, the old Seine department (corresponding to current departments of Haut-de-Seien 92, Seine-Saint-Denis 93, and Val de Marne 94) and other various cities of France. The language is French and the information is handwritten, but the cards are preprinted so the information to be keyed is easily found. The cards reveal the name, birthplace, birth date, and residence of the voter. Because there is only one person per card the image set includes five cards and the project difficulty level is average.

Birth Month

The birth date can be found on the "Date de naissance" line. Dates are generally written in the day-month-year format. Key or select the birth month from the provided drop-down list. To activate the list, key the first letter of the month. If the birth date is given in all numerals, it is still likely written in the day-month-year format. Key the month in full even if it appears abbreviated or numerically on the document. Key the month in French only. French months: Janvier, Février, Mars, Avril, Mai, Juin, Juillet, Août, Septembre, Octobre, Novembre and Décembre.

French also uses a form of abbreviation that throws people: the -bre months with a number that doesn't correspond to the modern number of the month. If there is a number with a superscript "bre", use the chart below. If the number does NOT have the superscript "bre", it is to be treated as normal.

abbreviation month

9bre or IXbre Novembre
10bre or Xbre Décember

Birth Year

The birth date can be found on the "Date de naissance" line. Key the birth year as seen, whether two or four digits. If a birth year is written on the document as two digits, please do not infer the first two digits of the year. Only key exactly what is written on the image. For example, if the birth date is "7-8-67" only key "67" as the birth year.
See Example

Residence

Key the residence from the "Commune" line, when present. The "Commune" field is not available on every card. Key the location as seen, using the provided drop-down list for assistance.

  • If the "Commune" is Paris, key the arrondissement number from the "Arrondissement" line followed by Paris into this field. For example, "7 Paris."
  • Additionally, if the "Commune" is blank, but there is a number written on the "Arrondissement" line, key the Arrondissement number followed by "Paris" into this field.
  • Or, if the arrondissement number is already written on the "Commune" line, remember to key as seen, and include it as part of the commune.
  • Arrondisement numbers for Paris should only be between 1 and 20.

If there is not a Commune listed but you see a stamped name of a city at the top or bottom of the card enter the name of the city in the Residence field.

Abbreviations/Comments

A few cards have an abbreviation or a comment written at the bottom of the card, sometimes in the Commune or Residence lines, but these are not to be keyed.  These include:  PSA (Parti Sans Addresse) - Left with no forwarding address;  Décédé (DCD) -  Deceased; and Inconnu/Inconne depuis (date) - Unknown/unknown since (date).
