Project Instructions This collection contains miscellaneous index card files containing biographical, pioneer, territorial and other information from the state of Oregon. There are two main types of cards being keyed, Biography Index and Pioneer Index. The Pioneer Index cards usually have more information than the Biography Index cards and are more standardized. When keying Biography Index cards you will need to determine what to key by keywords and the context of the cards.

When present, we will be keying name, spouse, ethnicity, occupation, birth date and place, location date, marriage date and place, death date and place and other date.

When keying months, some will appear on the image with only their first letter, for example: "S" for "September".

Note: Every other image in a set will likely be blank. Please also note that if you know a card is a 2nd page/back side it should not be keyed; if you cannot determine whether the card is the front or backside it should be keyed. Since there are enough images in an image set you should always be able to determine whether a card is front or back by looking forward if needed to the next images. Images always appear in sequence - front/back.

Biography Index

Choose the "Biography Index" form type for images that are NOT Pioneer Index images. Please refer to the "Pioneer Index" description for more information.

Additional Image Samples

Prefix

Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr," "Mr," or "Mrs," of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Only prefix values should be keyed into the prefix field. Name will appear at the top of a card or next to "Name."

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Initials should be keyed with a space between them and without entering periods. (NOTE: the middle initial is frequently spaced far to the right on the card, but do not omit it.) Name will appear at the top of a card or next to "Name."

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Name will appear at the top of a card or next to "Name."

Suffix

Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Name will appear at the top of a card or next to "Name."

Other Day

Key the day from the other date as seen on the record. Other date is the date on an index card other than the ones specifically defined such as birth or location date. The wiki image samples will help in determining which date to key. If there is a birth, marriage or death date on the image, do not enter a date into this field. If there are multiple "other" dates on a card, key the first one to appear.

Other Month

Key the month in its three-letter abbreviation from the other date using the dictionary provided to assist you. If the month appears as a number, key as seen. Other date is the date on an index card other than the ones specifically defined such as birth or location date. The wiki image samples will help in determining which date to key. In some cases the death date will appear directly after a name in a range. Example: 1835 (birth year) - 1897 (death year). Death year may also be found by reading the context of an index card. Example: "A horse threw him."

Spouse Prefix

Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr," "Mr," or "Mrs," of the spouse of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Spouse Given

Pioneer Index

Choose the "Pioneer Index" for images that are pre-printed cards asking for information such as: name, Born In, Ancestry, Married To, occupation, Remarks, etc. Cards may vary. Please refer to wiki image samples for clarification.
