Project Instructions

This collection contains a typed index of heads of household in the State Census of North Carolina, 1784-1787. There will be two columns of names on each page. Only names will be keyed. Do not key items in parenthesis, such as "widow".

Two types of lists are included in this book: population counts only, and heads of household. Only lists that contain heads of household should be keyed. Lists containing only population counts, without listing the names of the heads of household, should not be keyed and marked as "Cover Page, Section Header, etc.". Occasionally both types of lists will appear on the same page. The names from these images should be keyed. When a list ends and a new list begins on the same page, simply continue keying through the new list. There is no need to indicate a break between the two lists.

This collection contains an internal index as well. Images with this internal index that contain a name and page number should be not be keyed and marked as "Cover Page, Section Header, ect."
