About this project This collection contains the names of sheep owners and the number of sheep and lambs they owned, their location and the date of the return.

Project Instructions This New Zealand collection contains the names of sheep owners and the number of sheep and lambs they owned, their location and the date of the return.

When there are two or more columns of names, key from the top left down to the top right down.

Sheep Officers

Choose the "Sheep Officers" form type for images with "Name of Officer, Rank, Residence, and Date of Appointment" at the top of the image. Below this will be three columns with information to key.

Note: The column labeled "Name of Run and Owner" should also be keyed as shown in the wiki image sample. Key the name and Run or Farm.

Return Day

Key the day from the return date as seen on the record. Return date may be found in the column labeled "Name of Run and Owner" located on the right side of the image. The date is above the keywords mentioned, next to the words "Infected Flocks in District on," and will be in day-month-year format.

Return Month

Key the month as an abbreviation from the return date using the dictionary provided for assistance. Return date may be found in the column labeled "Name of Run and Owner" located on the right side of the image. The date is above the keywords mentioned, next to the words "Infected Flocks in District on," and will be in day-month-year format.

Return Year

Key the year from the return date as seen on the record. Return date may be found in the column labeled "Name of Run and Owner" located on the right side of the image. The date is above the keywords mentioned, next to the words "Infected Flocks in District on," and will be in day-month-year format. If there are multiple years (1887 and 1888) key the earliest year.

Suffix

Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance.

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Primary name may be found in the first column under the words "Name of Officer, Rank, Residence, and Date of Appointment" and will be in surname-given format.

If there are multiple owners i.e. "Anderson, J & A," key each owner into a separate record. Key business names into the given name field.

Names will also need keyed under the column labeled "Name or Run and Owner."

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Initials should be keyed with a space between them and without entering periods. Primary name may be found in the first column under the words "Name of Officer, Rank, Residence, and Date of Appointment" and will be in surname-given format.

If there are multiple owners i.e. "Anderson, J & A," key each owner into a separate record. Key business names into the given name field.

Names will also need keyed under the column labeled "Name or Run and Owner."

Prefix

Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr," "Mr," or "Mrs," of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Only prefix values should be keyed into the prefix field.

Residence Place

Key the residence place as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Separate any geographical locations with a comma. Ex: Tinui, Whareama. Residence place may be found in the second column after the rank(s) of the officer under the words "Name of Officer, Rank, Residence, and Date of Appointment."

Residence Day

Key the day from the residence date as seen on the record. Residence date may be found in the third column under the words "Name of Officer, Rank, Residence, and Date of Appointment."

Residence Month

Key the month as an abbreviation from the residence date using the dictionary provided for assistance. Residence date may be found in the third column under the words "Name of Officer, Rank, Residence, and Date of Appointment."

Residence Year

Key the year from the residence date as seen on the record. Residence date may be found in the third column under the words "Name of Officer, Rank, Residence, and Date of Appointment."

Run or Farm

Key the run or farm as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Run or farm may be found in the column labeled "Name of Run and Owner" after the name of the sheep owner separated by a comma. Pay close attention to where the name ends and the run or farm begins, as it is not always obvious.

Key the return district as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Return district may be found in the header of the image or just above a new section of sheep before or after the word "District."

Return Subdivision

Key the return subdivision as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Return subdivision may be found in the header of the image or just above a new section of sheep before or after the word "Subdivision."

Return County

Key the return county as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. When present, return county may be found in the header of the image just above a new section of sheep before or after the word "County."

Return Day

Key the day from the return date as seen on the record. Return date may be found where a new district or subdivision begins (at the start of a new alphabetical list of owners). Return date will be in day-month-year format.

Return Month

Key the month as an abbreviation from the return date using the dictionary provided for assistance. Return date may be found where a new district or subdivision begins (at the start of a new alphabetical list of owners). Return date will be in day-month-year format.

Return Year

Key the year from the return date as seen on the record. Return date may be found where a new district or subdivision begins (at the start of a new alphabetical list of owners). Return date will be in day-month-year format. If there are multiple years (1887 and 1888) key the earliest year.

Post Office

Key the post office as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Post office may be found in the column labeled "Post Office" or "Post Town."

Note: When run or farm and post office are in the same column, key both values into the run or farm field. (This should only occur in the column labeled "Run or Farm | Post Office.")
