About this project This collection consists of city and area directories for New Zealand, from 1866 to 1955:Wise's New Zealand Post Office Directories, 1875-1955 Stone's Dunedin & Invercargill Directory, 1886 Stone's Otago & Southland Directories, 1909 & 1915The Wise's New Zealand Post Office Directory comprises the majority of this collection. The directory was an unauthorized, commercial endeavor sanctioned by the Post Office and published by Henry Wise & Co., Dunedin. It covered all of New Zealand and was the first national postal directory of householders. The directory was published nearly every year or two years from 1872 to 1955.

Project Instructions
Names will only be keyed from the alphabetical and street directory listings. Adverstisement and other non name directory pages should be classified as "Cover page, Section header, etc."

Business names will be keyed in their own field. In many directories, business names are in all caps or are bolded, and so can be easily distinguished from person names.

Watch out for entries where individuals are listed as part of a business, but then also have their own entry. For example:

Aitken Bros (Alex and Geo)

Aitken, Alex (of Aitken Bros)

Aitken, Geo (of Aitken Bros)

On alphabetical directories where you can see all of these entries right next to each other, please key one entry for the business, and then one entry for each person.

This form type is for all images from which names will be keyed.

City

Key the Town or City which appears in uppercase letters at the top of the image or at the beginning of a list of names. Key the Town or City using the provided dictionary; however, if a Town or City does not appear in the dictionary then key as seen. If multiple cities are found on an image, create a new section for each city. If the image header includes the words "street directory" or "alphabetical" then the City is the name in the header. If the image header includes the words "towns directory" or "country" then the City will be found within the image as paragraph or list headers and will be all in capital letters or bolded (such as WANGAPEKA or Wendonside). If the image header contains a place name then that is the City.

Suffix

Names are written in the surname, given name format. Key all suffix titles, such as "Jr" or "III" that usually follow the surname of a person. Use the provided dictionary for assistance. If a suffix does not appear in the dictionary then key the suffix as seen.

Surname

Names are written in the surname, given name format. Key the surname of each person listed in the directory. Use the the provided dictionary for assistance. If a name does not appear in the dictionary then key the name as seen. If two names appear, such as "McCaskell and Rooney" then key as two separate and unique records, or key as a Business Name when appropriate.

Given

Names are written in the surname, given name format. Key the first name or initial and any middle names of each person listed in the directory. Use the provided dictionary if for assistance. If a name does not appear in the dictionary then key the name as seen. If two names appear, such as "McCaskell and Rooney" then key as two separate and unique records, or key as a Business Name when appropriate.

Prefix

Names are written in the surname, given name format. Key any titles before the Given name, such as "Dr", "Rev", "Mr" or "Mrs", using the provided dictionary for assistance. If a prefix does not appear in the dictionary then key the prefix as seen.

Business Name

Key business names (e.g. "Marshall, Izard & Wilson", "Wanganui Chronicle Co, Ltd", "John Jones & Sons, Ltd", "Bassett & Co, Ltd") here. Remember to key as a separate record, even if a person's name (such as an owner or proprietor) is given on the same line. Key as seen.

Keying Samples

Cover page, Section header, etc.

NZ Directory Cover Sample 1.JPG

Use the 'Cover page, Section header, etc' type for images that don't contain any data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide some type of context for the image set. For instance, historical notes, affidavits, and so forth.
