About this project This collection contains admission, apprenticeship, and discharge documents from girl's Industrial Schools in New South Wales. The Industrial Schools acted as orphanages, reform schools, and homes for at-risk girls. Admission could be by court order, necessity, or voluntary on the part of parents.

Choose the Admission form for any images containing admission information to the Industrial Schools. Admission forms will contain columns containing the following key words: "From What Bench", "Age on Admission", "Date of Conviction", "Inmates as on", or "Register of Committals."

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person to whom the record pertains using the dictionary provided for assistance. If a name does not appear in the dictionary then key the name as seen.

Surname

Key the Surname using the dictionary provided for assistance. If the surname does not appear in the dictionary then key the surname as seen.

Alias Given

Occasionally an alternate name may be recorded for a given individual. This name may be denoted by parentheses, quotation marks, or may be preceded by the word "nee". Key the first name or initial and any middle names using a dictionary if provided for assistance. If an alias given name does not appear in the dictionary then key the alias given name as seen.

Alias Surname

Key any Alias Surname which appears. Occasionally an alternate name may be recorded for a given individual. This name may be denoted by parentheses, quotation marks, or may be preceded by the abbreviation "for" or the words "nee" or "formerly". All the rules for keying a primary name should also be followed for keying any alias name.

Age at Residence

Key the age at the time the record was recorded.  Valid ages include numeric digits between "0" and "120" and fractions between "1/12" and "11/12". If an age includes years, months, and/or days, key only the years. For example, if an age appears as 10 years, 7 months, key age as "10" If an age appears in months, such as 10 months, key age as a fraction: "10/12". If an Age includes years plus a fraction, such as 3 3/12, key only the year: "3." If the age is less than one month, key "0."

Birth Day

Key the birth day when found. Birth dates are written in randomly on some images.

Birth Month

Key the birth month from the designated birth date when found. Birth dates are written in randomly on some images.

Birth Year

Key the two or four digit number designated as the birth year in the birth date when found. Birth dates are written in randomly on some images. The Year must be either two or four digits.

Which date should you key?

If you can determine that a specific Admission date corresponds with the age that is on the record please key this date and age combination. If you cannot determine which date corresponds with the age key the most recent Admission date on the record.

Admission or Discharge Day

The Admission or Discharge date will be located in the header of the document following the words "Date", "Date of Admission", "Date of Conviction", "Date of Committal", "Date of Leaving Institution", or "Discharged".  Key the Day from the date. If a date is not found in the header, but there is a date in the "Date" column, key the day from that date.If both an Admission date and Discharge date are present on the same image, key the Admission date. If there are multiple dates on the record and you cannot determine which date is the admission date use the most recent date.

The Father Given is the first name or initial with any middle names or initials of the father of the primary person to whom the record pertains. Using the dictionary provided, key the Father Given. If the name does not appear in the dictionary then key the name as seen.

The Father Surname is the last name of the father of the primary person to whom the record pertains. Key the Father Surname using the dictionary provided. If a surname does not appear in the dictionary then key the surname as seen.

Mother Given

The Mother Given is the first name or initial with any middle names or initials of the mother of the primary person to whom the record pertains. Using the dictionary provided, key the Mother Given. If a name does not appear in the dictionary then key the name as seen.

The Other Relative Surname is the last name of a second relative of the primary person to whom the record pertains. Key the Other Relative Surname using the dictionary provided. If a surname does not appear in the dictionary then key the surname as seen.
