About this project The 1885 census was a federally taken territorial census. It includes population, agriculture, manufacturer, and mortality schedules. Answers to census questions were supposed to reflect the individuals status as of 1 June 1885.

Schedule 1 - Inhabitants

This form will say "Schedule 1. - Inhabitants" at the top of the page in the header area.

County

Capture the county using the dictionary provided.

City or Town

Capture the City or Town using the dictionary provided for assistance. The city or town will be listed in the space between the words "in" and "in the county of" in the header area of the form. If a city or town does not appear in the dictionary then key whatever is listed in that field as seen. For example, if it says "Enumeration District 2", then you would key that into this field.On the Manufactures schedule, if the area where the city or town is normally listed is left blank, but there is a city or town listed in the Post Office field, please key the locality instead.

Capture the Enumeration District (ED) from the top left corner of the census form where it says "Enumeration Dist. No."

Key any titles before the Given name, such as "Dr", "Rev", "Mr" or "Mrs", using the dictionary for assistance. If a prefix does not appear in a dictionary then key the prefix as seen. On the Mortality schedules, if "stillborn", "child", "unknown", or "not stated" appears in the name column, key these as prefixes. If "child of Peter Pan" appears, key the complete phrase into the prefix field. On the Manufactures schedules, the name should be keyed from column 1. If a company name is listed instead of an individual's name, do not key that record. If you are unsure if the entry is a company name or an individual's name, enter the whole thing into the prefix field.

Race

The Race will be keyed from the Inhabitants and Mortality schedules only.Key the Race from the field titled "Color". This is column 5 on the Mortality schedules and column 4 on the Inhabitants schedules. Key as seen, using the provided dictionary for assistance
The choices are: W=White, B=Black, Mu=Mulatto, I=Indian, Ch=Chinese

Gender

Key the Sex or Gender into the Gender field from the column labled Gender on the Inhabitants and Mortality schedules. Enter "Male" for "M" and "Female" for "F". If an entry contains something other than one of these two options, key the field as seen.

Age

Enter the age from column 6 on the Inhabitants schedule and from column 3 on the Mortality schedule. · If an Age includes years, months, and/or days then key only the years. For example, if an Age appears as 10 years, 7 months then key the Age as 10. · If an Age appears in months only, such as 10 months, then key the Age as a fraction of twelfths ' 10/12.· If an Age includes a fraction, such as 3 3/8, key only the whole number ' 3.

Birth Month

On the Inhabitants schedule, capture the birth month from column 7, labeled "If born within the Census year, give the month." Key the month in full, even if listed as an abbreviation on the census form.

Relationship

Key the relationship from column 8 on the Inhabitants schedule. Key as seen, copying down the appropriate information when ditto marks are used.

Marital Status

Enter the marital status of the individual as marked in columns 9-12 on the Inhabitants schedule and in columns 6-8 on the Mortality schedule. Key the entries in full - either "Single", "Married", "Widowed", or "Divorced". "Single", "Married" and "Widowed" are indicated by slashes in the appropriate column. "Divorced" is indicated by a "D" in the same column as "Widowed".

A slash in column 12 on the Inhabitants schedule also should be indexed as "Married" as it means the person was married within the Census year.
