About this project This project contains information written on cards made from cigarette cartons of the inmates at Langenstein Zwieberge Concentration Camp. The project level is set at Average due to the number of records/cards per image and the quality of the images.

Nationality

The Nationality is an abbreviation in the upper-left or upper-right corner of the card. A drop-down list has been specifically created to accommodate the Nationality possibilities. Key the Letter(s) which appear in the corners of the image. For example, D, might appear in the corner. If no Letter appears indicating Nationality then mark the field blank.

Note: "J", "Ju" or "Juden" (All meaning Jewish), may appear next to the abbreviation for Nationality, it is to be included.

Prisoner Number

The Prisoner Number can be found in one of the upper corners of the card. Many cards have multiple numbers, in this event usually only one is not crossed off. Please key the most recent number only, following the General Guideline on replacement information.

Arrival Day

On some cards an arrival date will be found under the Prisoner Number. This date appears in the Day/Month/Year format. Key the Arrival Day as seen.

Arrival Month

On some cards an arrival date will be found in the Day/Month/Year format just below the Prisoner Number. Key the Arrival Month using the provided drop-down list for assistance. The Arrival Month appears in numeric form; however, select the appropriate alpha form of the month.

Arrival Year

Some cards will have an arrival date just below the Prisoner Number. The date appears in the Day/Month/Year format. Key the Arrival Year as seen.

Surname

The name of the inmate appears on all cards in the Surname / Given name format. Most of the time the Surname is written above the Given name but on a few cards the Surname is written in front of the Given name. Using the drop-down list provided for assistance, key the Surname. If a name does not appear in the drop-down list then key as seen.

Please be sure to key special characters such as ä, ö, ü, é, and so on. For example, the "é" in Zdenék. Note: a straight bar over a letter means it is to be doubled, and should be keyed as two letters, eg: the "m" in Zimmerman.

Given

Key the Given name(s) with the assistance of the drop-down list provided. The Given name consists of the first name or initial and any middle name or initial. If a Given name is not found in the dictionary then key the name as seen. The name on the cards is in the Surname / Given name format with the Surname often appearing above the Given name. If a name does not appear in the drop-down list then key the name as seen.

Birth Day

Enter the Birth Day from the date of birth. This will be a number from 1 to 31. The date of birth will appear in the Day/Month/Year format on some cards just below the Given name. Key the Birth Day as seen.

Enter the full name of the Birth Month from the date of birth, using the dropdown list to help you. The date of birth will appear just below the Given name on many cards in the numeric Day/Month/Year format. Key the Birth Month in its full alpha form.

The date of birth will appear in the numeric Day/Month/Year format just below the Given name on some of the cards. Key the Birth Year as seen.

Work Assignment

The Work Assignment can be found on the cards either just below the date of birth or below the name. Key the Work Assignment as seen.

Please be sure to key special characters such as ä, ö, ü, é, and so on. For example, the "é" in Zdenék. Note: a straight bar over a letter means it is to be doubled, and should be keyed as two letters, eg: the "m" in Zimmerman.

Note: It has been observed that it is doubtful this field is actually what they did at camp, is more likely what they did before camp. Nevertheless, please enter this field.

Block Number

The Block Number can be found on the cards either at the bottom of the image or below the Prisoner Number. Key as seen.

Death Day

On some cards a cross was placed on the bottom of the card and a date written below the cross. This date is the date of death which appears in the Day/Month/Year numeric format. Key the Death Day as seen.

The following are NOT death dates: Flucht (escaped), and überstellt (transferred)
