Project Instructions
This collection contains population schedules for both cities and counties in Kansas. Information is being keyed from title page images and population schedules. The majority of the images should be marked as "Cover Page, Section Header, etc." Do not key forms with agricultural information on them.
Note: 5 images will be downloaded per image set. Because of the way the images are organized, some sets will have no names to key, and some will have as many as 30 names to key.
If you come across records where there is an individual listed with a surname and others listed below without a surname (generally this is the head of household and their family) please copy the surname down until you encounter the next surname.
Project-specific sample images and form field help:
Choose a sample image from below to see the corresponding form field examples.
Census Form
Title Page

Use the "Census Form" type for images that are of population schedules. From these images, key all names and any date and location information available. If the image is far to illegible to key any names from, cancel the image set with the reason "Illegible". Do not key forms with agricultural information on them.
Note: While reviewing this project, if you come across an agricultural image that has been keyed, review as normal.
Township
Key the township as seen using the dictionary provided for assistance. The township will be at the top of the image, typically in the line marked "township". If there is no township at the top of the record, leave this field blank. Do not key the postal address as the township.

Enumeration Day

Surname

Pressing F3 will copy the surname down from the above record. If you come across records where there is an individual listed with a surname and others listed below without a surname (generally this is the head of household and their family) please copy the surname down until you encounter the next surname.
Suffix
Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname of the primary person to whom the record applies using a dictionary if provided for assistance. If a suffix does not appear in a dictionary then key the suffix as seen.
Keying Image Sample
If the image is far too illegible* to key any names from, mark the image as "Cover Page, Section Header, etc." If you can read any part of the page, please mark the record as a Census form type and enter the heading and any names that you can decipher. Note: there are two reels in particular that are nearly entirely illegible, these are 2278162 and 2278164 (the enumeration date for both is 1 Mar 1919). Reels 2278163 and 2278164 contain faded, but still salvageable pages, other images have some spots of damage, but are not lost, an attempt should be made to salvage these.
Title Page
Use the "Title Page" type for images that are the first page of a statistical roll. They will contain the year the census was taken, as well as the county and township.

Key the township as seen using the dictionary provided for assistance.
The township will be at the top of the image, typically in the line marked "township".
County

Cover page, Section header, etc
Use the "Cover page, Section header, etc' form type for images that do not contain data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide context for the image set. Example: historical notes, affidavits, etc.
Additional Image Samples
Image with no data
Use the 'Image with no data' form type for images that do not contain data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. Example: An image containing a blank background.
