This collection is comprised of Omaha retiree records for employees of the Chicago and North Western Railroad. We are keying data regarding the individual as it appears on the record, name, dates, occupation, etc.

Many of the records will contain a social security number. Due to the sensitive nature of this information we ask that you keep it confidential and not share screen shots containing the number on the wiki or the message boards.

Mark an image as a "Card" form type if the record has a name to key with information.

Prefix

Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr," "Mr," or "Mrs," of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Only prefix values should be keyed into the prefix field.

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Initials should be keyed with a space between them and without entering periods.

Name can be found near the top of the image or near the words "Name" or "Name in Full."

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance.

Name can be found near the top of the image or near the words "Name" or "Name in Full."

Suffix

Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance.

Social Security

Key "Y" if there is a Social Security number on the image. Key "N" if there is NOT a Social Security number on the image. The Social Security number can be found near the words "Social Security No.," "S.S.," or "S.S. No." and is in 000-00-0000 format. The Social Security number is present in various locations and sometimes multiple instances on an image.

NOTE: DO NOT KEY THE SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. ONLY KEY "Y" OR "N" DEPENDING ON WHETHER OR NOT A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER IS PRESENT ON THE IMAGE.

Occupation

Key the occupation as seen on the record from the line labeled "Occupation," "Present Occupation" or "Present Occupation with Railway."

Birth Month

Key the month as an abbreviation from the birth date using the dictionary provided for assistance.

Birth date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found near the words "Born" or "Date of Birth."

Birth Day

Key the day from the birth date as seen on the record.Birth date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found near the words "Born" or "Date of Birth."

Birth Year

Key the two or four digit year from the birth date.

Birth date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found near the words "Born" or "Date of Birth."

Birth Place

Key the birth place as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Separate any geographical locations with a comma (example: Chicago, Illinois).

Birth place can be found near the words "Place of Birth."

Record Place

Key the record place as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Separate any geographical locations with a comma (example: Chicago, Illinois). Do not key zip code numbers, the word "Shop," or any non-geographical places.

Record place may be found near the words "Where employed," "Where now employed by Railway," "Where now employed by Company," or something similar.

Hire Month

Key the month in its three-letter abbreviation from the hire date date using the dictionary provided for assistance.The hire date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found in the first entry in the "Dates of Employment" column or by the phrase "Continuous service dates from last entry into service on," or "First began work for the Company."  Beside the birth date this should be the earliest date available on the image.

Hire Day

Key the day from the hire date as seen on the record.The hire date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found in the first entry in the "Dates of Employment" column or by the phrase "Continuous service dates from last entry into service on," or "First began work for the Company." Beside the birth date this should be the earliest date available on the image.

Hire Year

Key the two or four digit year from the hire date.The hire date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found in the first entry in the "Dates of Employment" column or by the phrase "Continuous service dates from last entry into service on," or "First began work for the Company."  Beside the birth date this should be the earliest date available on the image.

Record Month

Key the month as an abbreviation from the record date using the dictionary provided for assistance.

Record date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found near the words "Record as of," "Date of Making this Record," "Date Signed," or "Signature of Employee." This is often the latest date on the image.

Record Day

Key the day from the record date as seen on the record.

Record date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found near the words "Record as of," "Date of Making this Record," "Date Signed," or "Signature of Employee." This is often the latest date on the image.

Record Year

Key the two or four digit year from the record date.

Record date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found near the words "Record as of," "Date of Making this Record," "Date Signed," or "Signature of Employee." This is often the latest date on the image.

Death Month

Key the month in its three-letter abbreviation from the hire date using the dictionary provided for assistance.

The death date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found near the words "Died," "Dead," or "Deceased." The death date appears in various written-in locations on the image.

Death Day

Key the day from the death date as seen on the record.

The death date is typically in month/day/year format and can be found near the words "Died," "Dead," or "Deceased." The death date appears in various written-in locations on the image.

Death Year

Key the two or four digit year from the death date.

Use the "Cover page, Section header, etc' form type for images that do not contain data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide context for the image set. Example: historical notes, affidavits, etc.

Use the 'Image with no data' form type for images that do not contain data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. Example: An image containing a blank background.

Target

Choose the "Target" form type when the image is of a color and/or gray scale target. Target images are used to determine focus and color balance in the initial digitizing process.
