Project Instructions The images in this collection are machine text (typed) and very easy to read. Keying information is typically very straightforward, though some elements, especially localities may require more attention. Each sample in this wiki was given to represent the diversity of images in this collection.

Record Keying Instructions

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance.

Name is typically the first element to appear in a record and will most often appear in surname-given format. Key only the first or primary name for each record. Do not key children, spouses or other names that may appear.

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Initials should be keyed with a space between them.

Maiden or Alias Name

Occasionally an alternate surname may be recorded for an individual. This name may be denoted by parentheses, quotation marks, or may be preceded by the abbreviation "for." or the words "nee" or "formerly." Key the alias surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance.

Birth Day

Key the day in its numerical form from the birth date.

When present, birth date may be found after the abbreviation "b" or the word "birth" and will most often appear in day-month-year format.

Birth Month

Key the month as an abbreviation from the birth date using the dictionary provided for assistance. If the month appears as a number, key as seen.

When present, birth date may be found after the abbreviation "b" or the word "birth" and will most often appear in day-month-year format.

Birth Year

Key the year in its numerical form from the birth date.

When present, birth date may be found after the abbreviation "b" or the word "birth" and will most often appear in day-month-year format.

Emigration Month

Key the month as an abbreviation from the birth date using the dictionary provided for assistance. Emigration date is the date the emigrant left Germany.

When present, emigration date may appear after the abbreviation "e" for "emigration" or in the column labeled "Year" or at the end of the record.

Emigration Year

Key the year in its numerical form from the birth date. Emigration date is the date the emigrant left Germany.

When present, emigration date may appear after the abbreviation "e" for "emigration" or in the column labeled "Year" or at the end of the record.

Emigration City

Key the emigration city as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Emigration city is the city the primary person is moving to from Germany.

When present, emigration city may appear after the abbreviation "e" for "emigration" or in a separate column sometimes labeled "Destination," or at the end of the record.

Emigration Country

Key the emigration country as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Emigration country is the country the primary person is moving to from Germany.

When present, emigration country may be found after the word "To" at the head of a group of records or at the end of the record in a separate column. If there is no emigration country listed, leave this field blank.

Departure City

Key the departure city as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Departure city is the city the primary person is from in Germany.

When present, departure city may be found after the word "From" at the head of a group of records or in the column labeled "Place of Origin." Departure city may also be found underneath or after the name(s), sometimes after the word "of."

Use the 'Cover page, Section header, etc' type for images that don't contain any data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide some type of context for the image set. For instance, historical notes, affidavits, and so forth.

Use the 'Image with no data' type for images that don't contain any data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. For instance, an image containing only the blank background or an image with a microfilm target on it.
