About this project This is a collection of crew lists held by the Dorset History Centre which is the archive library for Bournemouth, Dorset, and Poole. The lists contain information on ship voyages, crew members and apprentices.

"Ship only info" crew list pages consist primarily of the crew list cover pages. They contain information regarding a ship and its voyage(s). The name of the ship, port of registry, and date are almost always present. They do not contain any lists of names. Use this form type for any images that contain keyable information about the ship, but no listings of people.

Ship Name

Key the ship name from the header area of the cover page from the field labeled "Name of Ship." Use the provided drop-down list to assist you. If a ship name is not in the dictionary, key the ship name as seen.

Key the port of registry from the header area of the cover page from the field labeled "Port of Registry." Use th provided drop-down list for assistance. If a port is not in the dictionary, key the port as seen.

Registry Day

The date of registry may be found at the top or bottom of the cover page. Key the date that appears after words such as "Received at" and followed by "by [Name] Shipping Master" or "Signed by [Name] Master, on the...[Date]." Key the day as seen.

Registry Month

The date of registry may be found at the top or bottom of the crew list. Key the date that appears after words such as "Recevied at" and followed by "by [Name] Shipping Master" or "Signed by [Name] Master, on the...[Date]." Key the name of the month in full, even if abbreviated or written numerically on the record.

Crew List - People



There are a variety of forms and registers used that fall into the crew list category. Any image which contains a list people (crew members, apprentices, deceased seamen, etc.) should be classified as a crew list.

Ship Name

Key the ship name from the header area of the crew list from the field labeled "Name of Ship." Use the provided drop-down list to assist you. If a ship name is not in the dictionary, key the ship name as seen.

Prefix

All names should be keyed from these registers except for ship masters, owners, and those recieving the registers. This includes lists of crew members, apprentices, children born on board the ship, their parents, and deceased seamen or other individuals. Each person should be keyed as a unique record. Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr", "Rev", "Mr" or "Mrs", using the provide dictionary for assistance. If a prefix does not appear in a dictionary then key the prefix as seen.

All names should be keyed from these registers except for ship masters, owners, and those recieving the registers. This includes lists of crew members, apprentices, children born on board the ship, their parents, and deceased seamen or other individuals. Each person should be keyed as a unique record. Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the person. Use the provided dictionary for assistance. If a name does not appear in the dictionary then key the name as seen.

All names should be keyed from these registers except for ship masters, owners, and those recieving the registers. This includes lists of crew members, apprentices, children born on board the ship, their parents, and deceased seamen or other individuals. Each person should be keyed as a unique record. Key the surname of the person. Use the provided dictionary for assistance. If the surname does not appear in the dictionary, key the surname as seen.

Suffix

All names should be keyed from these registers except for ship masters, owners, and those recieving the registers. This includes lists of crew members, apprentices, children born on board the ship, their parents, and deceased seamen or other individuals. Each person should be keyed as a unique record. Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname of the person, using the provided dictionary for assistance. If a suffix does not appear in a dictionary then key the suffix as seen.

Age

Key the age of the crew member or apprentice when the age column is present. Key the age according to the following rules:If an age includes years, months, and/or days then key only the years. For example, if an age appears as 10 years, 7 months then key the age as 10.  If an age appears in months only, such as 10 months, then key the age as a fraction of twelfths ' 10/12. If an age includes a fraction, such as 3 3/8, key only the whole number ' 3.

Birthplace

Key the birthplace from columns labeled:Town and County where born Place of Birth, stating name of Town and County Nationality (If British, state birthplace) In the case of the column labeled "Nationality (If British, state birthplace)" only key what is in that field if it is a locality. If it is a nationality, even if it says "British," key the nationality into the nationality field. Use the provided dictionary for assistance in keying the birthplace. If a location is not found in the dictionary then key the location as seen. Separate jurisdictions such as town and county with a comma.

Key the nationality from the column labeled "Nationality (If British, state birthplace)" when present. Only key what is in this field if it is a nationality. If it is a locality, key the locality into the birthplace field. Use the provided dictionary for assistance in keying. If a location is not found in the dictionary then key the nationality as seen.
