Project Instructions This collection contains records pertaining to land held in California by immigrants who were not naturalized citizens. During this time in American history, laws were passed that made it difficult for immigrants, especially those of Japanese descent, to own land. The records in this collection represent individuals who attempted to circumvent these laws by means such as having their American-born children become the owners of the estate. We will be keying names of estate owners and guardians, and their roles. We are also keying the county, file date and file number.

We will be keying from cards and packets. Please key each card, even if the primary name is the same. Pay special attention to which type of card is being keyed so as to capture the correct role.

When keying from packets, we are only keying the title page of the packet. Please note that since these images were imaged in reverse, title pages will be found at the end of a packet.

Packet

CaliforniaAlienLand Packet 1.JPG

Choose the "Packet" form type for images that are of title pages. A title page is typically in landscape orientation and will often have four creases or folds in equal proportions across the page that form columns for typed or written information. Some packets have information in one or more of the "columns," but some have no writing at all, with the exception of the file number.

These title pages are the first page of a packet of information. Each additional page in the packet should be labeled as a 'Cover page, section header, etc.'

Note: The images in this collection were imaged in reverse so that the title page image will be found at the end of a packet, rather than at the beginning.

File Number

Key the file number as seen on the record. Do not zero pad the file number. File number is typically a stamped number located somewhere at the top of the image. If there is no file number located on the image, you may leave this field blank. Because file number is so important, you will be required to override the file number if it is left blank.

CaliforniaAlienLand Capture 1.JPG

Use the "Cover page, Section header, etc' form type for images that do not contain data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide context for the image set. Example: historical notes, affidavits, etc.
