Project Instructions Appletons' Cylopedia of American biography is a series of volumes of biographies of famous Americans in the United States. The series spanned multiple decades, and contained entries from most states. It contains more than 60,000 entries. Much of the information was complied by either the subjects themselves, or by their families. This collection contains volumes from the 1887, 1888, and 1889 editions.

What Names Should I Key? Key names that are printed in bold with a biographical summary following. Do not key names found within the main body of a biographical summary, even if they are printed in bold. Please do not key names of publishers or contributors.

Mark an image as a Record if it contains names in bold, followed by a biographical description.

Record Keying Instructions

Prefix

Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr," "Mr," or "Mrs," of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you. Only prefix values should be keyed into the prefix field. The name of the primary person will be found in bold print at the beginning of a block of text. Do not key names found within the body of a block of text.

Given Name

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you. Initials may be separated with periods, if periods are found on the image, but initials should otherwise be separated with a space. The name of the primary person will be found in bold print at the beginning of a block of text. Do not key names found within the body of a block of text.

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you. The name of the primary person will be found in bold print at the beginning of a block of text. Do not key names found within the body of a block of text.

Suffix

Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III," following the surname of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you. The name of the primary person will be found in bold print at the beginning of a block of text. Do not key names found within the body of a block of text.

Birth Day

Key the day in its numerical form from the birth date. Birth date will be found directly after the birth place, or after the keyword "b."

Birth Month

Key the month as an abbreviation from the birth date using the dictionary provided to assist you. Birth date will be found directly after the birth place, or after the keyword "b."

Birth Year

Key the year in its numerical form from the birth date. Birth date will be found directly after the birth place, or after the keyword "b."

Birth Place

Key the birth place as seen on the record. Birth place will be found directly after the keywords "b. in."

Death Day

Key the day in its numerical form from the death date. Death date will be found directly after the death place, or after the keyword "d."

Death Month

Key the month as an abbreviation from the death date using the dictionary provided to assist you. Death date will be found directly after the death place, or after the keyword "d."

Death Year

Key the year in its numerical form from the death date. Death date will be found directly after the death place, or after the keyword "d."

Death Place

Key the death place as seen on the record. Death place will be found directly after the keywords "d. in."

Occupation

Key the occupation of the primary person as seen on the record. The occupation of the primary person will usually be found directly after the name of the primary person.

Use the 'Cover page, Section header, etc' type for images that don't contain any data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide some type of context for the image set. For instance, historical notes, lists of contributors, introduction pages, and so forth.

Use the 'Image with no data' type for images that don't contain any data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. For instance, an image containing only the blank background or an image with a microfilm target on it.
