About this project
This collection contains a typed index of the 1864 state-wide census. This census was mandated by the Georgia governor and state legislature for the purpose of enabling a re-organization of the state militia to better protect women, children, and invalids at home during the years of the Civil War. All free white males living in Georgia who were between the ages of 16 and 60, except those already active in military service, were required to enroll in the Georgia militia via this census. Details recorded for each man included name, age, occupation, nativity, Company District number, and grounds for any exemption from service in the militia.
