West Virginia Court Records
This entry was originally written by Johni Cerny, in Red Book: American State, County, and Town Sources.
Having been part of Virginia until 1863, West Virginia kept the same court system as its parent state (see Virginia Court Records). The Historical Records Survey Collection, on film in the West Virginia and Regional History Collection at the West Virginia University Library and the FHL, includes a variety of records: county court records; execution books; fee books; rule books; birth, marriage, and death registers; deed indexes, land taxes, land books, personal property books, justices criminal dockets, and others. Intermingled among court records are naturalizations, emancipations, school commissioner reports, and cattle brands. For a list of records in this collection by county, see www.libraries.wvu.edu/wvcollection/countycourt/index.htm.
