The Historical Records Survey (HRS), created in 1935 as part of the Federal Writers Project by the Works Projects Administration (WPA) in response to massive unemployment during the Great Depression, indexed federal censuses, vital records, military records, and cemetery interments. The HRS compiled the largest collection of West Virginia tombstone inscriptions available today. The collection includes inscriptions prior to 1940 and can be found in the West Virginia and Regional History Collection and on microfilm at The Family History Library (FHL).

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and others have published volumes of cemetery records and tombstone inscriptions that can be found in local, regional, and genealogical libraries in West Virginia and at the FHL.
