Newspapers have existed for many years in Hispanic countries, even in smaller towns. Many have been microfilmed, and references to them can be located either on microfilm or hard copy in the following:

  1. Newspapers in Microform: Foreign Countries.
  2. Catalog of the Library of Congress.
  3. Many university library catalogs (identify these through the Interlibrary Loan Service).
  4. Catalogs of the bibliotecas, hermotecas (newspaper archives) or archivos nacionales of the country and archivos estatales of the state or province of interest.

Although obituaries are more common in small-town newspapers in the United States than in Latin American countries, the Hispanic researcher should carefully search all local newspapers in the area where his or her ancestors died for a published obituary.
