Tony Burroughs teaches at Chicago State University. He was the genealogist featured in The Real Family of Jesus (Discovery Channel), and was interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning, CBS News, ABC World News Tonight, BET Nightly News, and seven episodes of Ancestors (PBS). Tony has been quoted in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, People Magazine, Time Magazine, the Christian Science Monitor, Ebony, and Jet Magazine. His Black Roots: A Beginners Guide to Tracing the African American Family Tree (Simon & Schuster) was number one on Essence Magazine's Best Seller List. Tony authored 'How to Create a Family Tree' in The Experts Guide to 100 Things Everyone Should Know How to Do (Random House) and was a co-author of the African American Genealogical Sourcebook (Gale Research). He wrote the "African American Research" chapter of The Source: A Guidebook to American Genealogy.

He lectures throughout the United States and Canada, delivering more than sixty lectures at national conferences, including seven keynotes. His Soundex research led to correcting a forty-year omission by the National Archives. Former board positions include the Association of Professional Genealogists, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and GENTECH. He is a former president of the Afro-American Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago. Tony received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Genealogical Society and is a fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association.
