How can this article name be changed to "1890 Census Substitute"?

City Directories

If your ancestors lived in major cities, the City Directories are a wealth of information.  Some possible information: residential address; occupation and sometimes employer; if proprietor of the business, a business address; spouse; sometimes children, if older teenagers (I have seen as young as age 16 in my family record).  The directories may also have business listings similar to telephone yellow pages.  There may also be a street-by-street listing so you can find out who the neighbors were.  This part is even more informative than the census.  The directories are issued frequently, too.  Some holdings have one nearly every year.  So not only do they provide a substitute for 1890 they also fill in the gaps between other censuses. And they provide information later than 1940 (up to 1958 in the City that I was researching.)
