The archives and historical research library is operated as one unit by the State Historical Society of North Dakota and holds several categories of records that are discussed elsewhere. The staff will do a limited search in censuses and newspapers if specific information is known. Guide to the North Dakota State Archives (Bismarck, N.Dak.: State Historical Society of North Dakota, North Dakota Heritage Center, 1985) is available to assist in using the library's collection.

Many of the territorial records for the Dakotas are housed at the State Archives of North Dakota including Dakota Territorial Papers (1877'86), the Office of Indian Affairs Correspondence for the years 1824 through 1887, and the Indian Treaty negotiations between 1801 and 1869.
