Statewide vital record registration for births, deaths and marriages began in South Dakota in July 1905. Copies of later vital records may be obtained from the State Department of Health, Health Statistics Program, Joe Foss Building, Pierre, SD 57501 www.state.sd.us/doh/VitalRec/Vital.htm. The current fee (2004) is $10 for birth and death records; $7 for marriage and divorce records. Some earlier marriage records may be found in the office of the register of deeds of a particular county. Published records of marriages exist for Minnehaha and Pennington Counties. Divorce records were recorded statewide after 1905, but earlier ones may be at the Clerk of the Court in the appropriate county.
