John Snyder, The Story of New Jersey's Civil Boundaries 1606'1968, includes very helpful maps (see Guides). Useful highway maps are available in all or most counties and older maps have been published, mostly from the 1840s to the 1880s, in county histories, atlases, and in individual sheets. Excellent collections of maps are at the New Jersey Historical Society, the New Jersey State Library, the New Jersey State Archives, and Rutgers Special Collections. See Agnes B. At the state library, state archives, the New Jersey Historical Society, and Rutgers Special Collections are some modern city maps marked to show ward boundaries. These are helpful for locating persons in census records when an address is known. The state archives has many maps for locating roads described in the county road returns.
