Periodicals

Many periodicals and quarterlies have been printed through the years, for example: The Louisiana Genealogical Register (compiled and published by the state genealogical society), The New Orleans Genesis, the Natchitoches Genealogist, and others.

Newspapers

The earliest known Louisiana newspaper was Le Moniteur, published in New Orleans, but only a few issues still exist. Numerous guides have been compiled to Louisiana newspapers. See, for instance:

  • McMullan, Theodore N. Louisiana Newspapers, 1794'1961. Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Library, 1965.

Louisiana State University created the Louisiana Newspaper Project, which first catalogued and then microfilmed extant Louisiana newspapers. These microfilms are available in the LSU Libraries (Middleton and Hill Memorial libraries) and other libraries throughout the state. Some libraries will loan the film through Interlibrary Loan. For more information see the Louisiana Newspaper Project website at www.lib.lsu.edu/special/frames/llmvc.html.

Manuscripts

The manuscript collections of the large libraries, college and university libraries, and archives throughout the state are numerous. Most of these institutions have guides to their holdings. See listings for these institutions below.
