Map of Indiana

County maps can be found in the surveyor's office of most courthouses and may sometimes be purchased or photocopied. They include historical county maps and contemporary county, township, and city maps. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries: Indiana (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1996) may also be helpful.

A. T. Andreas, Maps of Indiana Counties in 1876 '¦ (Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Society, 1968), a reprint of the 1876 Illustrated Historical Atlas of the State of Indiana (Chicago: Baskin, Forster, 1876), has been published by and is available from the Indiana Historical Society.

Indiana topographical and geological survey maps are available through the Indiana Department of Conservation, State Office Bldg., Indianapolis, IN 46204.

The earliest Sanborn fire insurance map (see page 5) available for the state of Indiana is 1883. The Indiana State Library has a few Sanborn fire insurance maps on microfilm; the Indiana University Geography and Map Library in Bloomington, however, has an almost complete collection of these maps. Atlas and plat maps for each county and township dating 1875 to present are at the Indiana State Library. County maps show roads, railroads, churches, cemeteries, and schools.
