The commissioner's office of each Indiana county may have burial records for soldiers, sailors, and marines. If available, the records should include name, age, date of enlistment, discharge date, and death date. Records begin about 1862.
The Indiana State Library holds records of inscriptions from some Indiana cemeteries. The 'Indiana Cemetery Locator File,' compiled by the Genealogy Division, is an alphabetical listing of cemeteries, indicating the location in the state and the designation in the Genealogy Division of the Indiana State Library where inscriptions may be found. Cemeteries of Indiana, by Virgil A. Jewell (typescript, 1970), and Indiana Cemetery Directory (Cemetery Association of Indiana, 1961) may also be helpful.
In the 1940s, the American Legion and the Indiana Adjutant General's Office were responsible for the 'Veteran's Grave Registration File.' The Indiana State Archives holds the original card file; it has been duplicated on thirteen microfilm reels. Included are soldiers buried in Indiana who fought in wars prior to and including World War I. The file includes fifty-one of the ninety-two counties.
