Counties were not formed in Georgia until 1777, covering at that time only a portion of Georgia's present jurisdiction. Eventually, as Native American land was acquired, new counties were created. Land records were then recorded with the clerk of the superior court in each county. Probate records were recorded with the clerk of the ordinary court, as were marriages. Most civil court cases were handled completely by the superior court.

Each county office was contacted in order to verify record dates and county addresses. This information can also be found in Davis's Research in Georgia (see Background Sources for Georgia).

The Georgia Archives has nearly all of the state's pre-1900, bound, county records on microfilm and has several collections of loose, original records.

Walton (old) 1803 (abolished 1812; in North Carolina)
The area of the original Walton County in Georgia is in what is now Transylvania County, North Carolina. When the boundary between Georgia and North Carolina was fixed, Walton was abolished. At that time, the settlement was adjacent to Buncombe County, North Carolina.
