Before 1922, the vast majority of alien women derived citizenship from their husbands or fathers who were already U.S. citizens. However, the example of Mary E. Pyburn, naturalized in a Brooklyn, New York, court in 1869, points to the possibility of exceptions to the rule. Indexes to naturalizations should be searched for all family names.
