The 1897 affidavit of Virgil W. [Wyatt] Earp (right) states he has met the military service requirement to homestead under the Soldiers' and Sailors' Homestead Act of June 8, 1872. This act allowed honorably discharged soldiers and sailors with at least 90 days of service to apply up to four years of their service towards the settlement requirement (five years) of the Homestead Act of 1862.
