Project Instructions The purpose of this project is to capture the names of those who were taxed in Beaver County, Pennsylvania between the years of 1840-1850.

What Names Should I Key? In this collection, there will typically be multiple names listed on each image. Each name should be keyed. There will not be any keywords indicating the start of a new name. The name of the primary person will typically appear with a list of their taxed items, such as land, horses, and cows, written directly below.

Choose the 'Register' doctype for images that have names to be keyed.

Register Keying Instructions

Prefix

Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr," "Mr," or "Mrs," of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance.
Names should be keyed top to bottom, left to right.

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Initials may be separated with periods, if periods are found on the image, but initials should otherwise be separated with a space. The name of the primary person will typically be found listed on the Register doctype with their taxed items written directly below.
Names should be keyed top to bottom, left to right.

Note - the name of the primary person will most often be written in surname-given name format.

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. The name of the primary person will typically be found listed on the Register doctype with their taxed items written directly below.
Names should be keyed top to bottom, left to right.

Suffix

Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III," following the surname of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance.
Names should be keyed top to bottom, left to right.

The 'Title Page' doctype will typically have the keywords "Property Tax Records" and a Residence Place and/or Year.

Title Page Keying Instructions

Residence Place

Key the residence place as seen on the image. The residence place may include any combination of city, county, state, or country names. When present, the residence place will be found on the Title Page typically written near the top of the image.

Note - Residence place is an empty field that may contain multiple geographical locations. It will not include a dictionary.

Residence Year

Key the year in its numerical form from the Title Page.

Use the 'Cover page, Section header, etc' type for images that don't contain any data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide some type of context for the image set. For instance, historical notes, affidavits, and so forth.

Image with no data

Use the 'Image with no data' type for images that don't contain any data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. For instance, an image containing only the blank background or an image with a microfilm target on it.
