The 1950 census was taken on April 1, 1950. The official census population count was 179,323,175. The 1950 census will become available to the public on or about April 2, 2022.

Questions Asked in the 1950 Census

The 1950 Census form called for the street, avenue, road, and house number; the number of dwelling house and family in order of visitation; whether the home was a farm or ranch; whether the house was situated on a property of 3 or more acres; if applicable, the number of the corresponding agriculture questionnaire; the name of each person whose usual place of residence on April 1, 1950 was with this family; the relationship of this person to the head of the family; each person's color or race; sex; age at last birthday; marital condition; his or her place of birth; naturalization status of the foreign-born; if the person worked or kept house most of the previous week; if not working most of the week, if they worked at all the previous week; if not, if he or she was looking for work; if he or she worked at all the previous week, how many hours; if employed or looking for work, his or her trade, profession, or particular kind of work done, and the industry of business with which he or she was involved, and his or her class of worker.

Supplementary questions were asked of those enumerated on lines 1, 6, 11, 16, 21 and 26 of each sheet: place of residence on April 1, 1949; place of birth of both parents; Highest grade of school attended and whether it was completed; if the person attended school at any time since February 1, 1950; if looking for work, how many weeks; number of weeks worked in 1949; income received in 1949; income received by entire family if the person is a family head; and any war or military service.
